The goal of the Harbor Bight Policy Initiative is to enhance the integration
of science and public policy within the New York - New Jersey Harbor Bight through social
science research, outreach, and collaborative decision-making that improves existing information
networks and assists in the development of equitable coastal policies at the
Federal, State, and local levels.
The Harbor Bight is fragmented in its policy approach due to the institutional,
legislative, and geographic barriers that inhibit agencies, organizations,
enterprises, and academic institutions from collaborating effectively.
The Harbor Bight Policy Initiative intends to promote a coastal marine
decision-making process that uses the best scientific and community-based
information available when creating policy.
In order to facilitate an integrated approach to coastal marine policy-making,
the Harbor Bight Policy Initiative advocates for equitable coastal marine policies
that conserve environmental resources while providing for sustainable economic
development. The Initiative performs public-policy research and education to
enhance the understanding of the decision-making process for both scientists
and the general public.
